The Evil Eye and its Cure

Evil Eye (‘Ayn)

Have you ever felt that things weren’t quite right? The wrong things always happen at the right times? Perhaps a feeling of impending doom? Chances are you might suffer from the evil eye.

What is meant by evil eye?

Evil eye is from the matters of the unseen - meaning it’s not something that a person can see but its effects can be seen. Ibn al Qayyim, a prolific writer of old said the evil eye “is the arrow that is taken out from the soul of the envious individual (the one who causes the affliction of the evil eye) and then it is fired upon the subject of the evil eye.”. The origin of the evil eye is envy (hasad) and envy is a sort of jealousy wherein a person wants some favour/nice thing for themselves and for it to be removed from someone else. The envied person can be affected by it sometimes and other times it may not affect a person. Evil eye is said to be one of the diseases of the heart and the envious person is said to be in a constant state of anxiety and sorrow because of his envy. The evil eye is historically documented across a wide range of cultures and religions, and in modern times we see people wearing talismans/amulets and sometimes burning things like sage and possibly olive leaves to ward off the harmful effects of the evil eye, though these talismans/amulets and fumigating don’t offer any protection.
